Liberty came to SGR in November of 2022. She was said to be bred and we were worried because of her age. We had her checked immediately and thankfully she was not! She is a thick boned, shapey grade quarter horse type. Libby as we lovingly call her, is 3 years old.

Liberty was adopted in August of 2023 by a great family who named her Cheyenne. She now is training at a dressage barn and enjoying the finer things in life! Before she left SGR we had her DNA sent off to see what her breed is, turns out she is a Holsteiner!

She's a BIG girl but loves people and is so sweet. She sometimes forgets her size but means well, think of great dane lap dog in horse form!
Mocha was adopted by her foster family after being there a few months. They fell in love with her sweet demeanor and we couldn't have found a better fit for her.

Mocha was one of the first horses we took in after "officially" being a 501c3 nonprofit. She came to SGR in April of 2021 as a filly with locking stifles. This means her back legs would lock straight and not be able to bend at the knee. She was underweight, had conjunctivitis in her eye and was scared. We took it slow with her rehab but she flourished. After almost a year and a half she made a full recovery and left those locking stifles in the dust!
Her foster family took her on to train her and we realized her had a lot of trauma around training. Our best guess is that someone forced her to work while her legs were locking. They again took their time with her and used a lot of patience and love. Through this they fell in love with her and decided she could be beautiful pasture ornament if thats what she wanted in life.

We pulled Solo in February of 2021, right after we had files for our nonprofit. He was in a kill pen in TX and looked awful. he had dreads, needed weight and looked defeated. When he arrived at our local QT barn, he was a really quiet boy, never making a peep to the other horses. He was well behaved for the vet and farrier but just quiet. When the farm brought their next rescue in, he called out for the first time. He wanted to know her and seemed to perk up whenever the mare was around.
Needless to say the farm owner fell in love with him for his love of her mare. They have been inseparable ever since!

When he entered the auction ring, was was being ridden. A horse flipper was the only other person bidding on him. We talked to the flipper and he finally agreed to let us have him.
We brought him home and loved him hard for about 2 weeks. He had a full belly, a bath and constant attention. We knew it wasn't fair to draw out his pain so we had the vet come and help him leave this earth on a beautiful day with a belly full of treats. She aged him at well over 30 years old. We don't know the quality of life he had before SGR but we know he knew how loved he was with us.
Juju was a beautiful appendix horse who was surrendered to SGR in July of 2021. She was used for barrel racing and in 2016-2017 won her fair share of buckles and saddles. She had a large arthritic knee which is why when she arrived to us, we retired her form riding and let her live out her days with our herd.
We had her knee x-rayed when

We had her knee x-rayed when she arrived to us and knew in November of 2022 that her knee was causing her more pain than it had been. The vet advised us that with winter coming and the ground getting harder it was only going to prove to be harder on her as well. We chose to let her go on a warm November afternoon, in the sunshine with all of her favorite people and horses surrounding her. She was a beautiful girl and lived to the ripe age of 29.
Nugget was the kindest, most gentle yearling. He came to SGR with his mom, Momma, in November of 2022. He was roughly 6 months old and had found himself in a kill pen with Momma and his older brother, Nolan. He was unhandled and very leery of people.

We took our time gaining his trust and when he was ready, we halter trained him. It was so easy because he trusted us and he was such a gentle boy. We got him gelded and had the very best home lined up for him to be adopted to. Because of his gentle nature he was going to be a 4H and therapy horse for kids.
He unfortunately had a horrific accident in the pasture one day and broke his leg exposing his fetlock joint. Our vet was out immediately and collectively we made the decision that the best option for Nugget's quality of life would be to let him go. It was one of the hardest choices I personally have ever made as he was my best boy and a farm favorite but our horses quality of life will always trump our selfishness. The best boy gained his wings in October 2023.
Pungo was a magnificent, beautiful man. He came to SGR as an owner surrender in October 2022. He was malnourished and had not seen a vet or farrier in quite some time if ever. The situation he came from gave him every reason to resent people but instead he was a forgiving, kind soul. He loved attention and to be around you.

We got him comfortable with the farrier and vet, He gained weight beautifully and loved being a part of the herd.
One afternoon he seemed colicy and we had the emergency vet out. Meds were given and he seems to perk up. Blood work came back that night and seemed fine but the next morning things had taken a turn for the worst. The vet was called out immediately again. He had a high fever we couldn't get down and his body was swollen everywhere. Blood work was taken again and this time it showed a very different story. He body was failing him and there was nothing we could do to stop it. The closest hospital is 4 hours away and he wouldn't have made it. We all cried over him as we did the best thing we could and let him be pain free.
Pungo was roughly 25 years old and loved with everything he had. He had the most beautiful mane that blew in the wind as he pranced through the fields. He is greatly missed by all that had. the honor of knowing him.
